Measurements of the corrosion potential

The test consists in the analysis of areas of reinforced concrete structures exposed to the atmosphere using the potential mapping method, with the aim of evaluating the corrosion state of the reinforcements. The electrical continuity of the steel rebars and of these with the connection point is first checked. The reference electrode is placed in electrolytic contact with the concrete surface: it is connected to the negative terminal of the voltmeter while the steel rebars are connected to the positive one. The measurements are carried out by placing the reference electrode in different areas of the surface of the structure, according to a grid of appropriate spacing previously drawn on the surface itself. Any potential variations read on the instrument at different points of the acquisition mesh may indicate differential oxidative states of the reinforcing bars, also with reference to threshold values.
