Identification of timber species

Reduced size samples are taken to classify the wood specie of a timber element through microscope observation. The samples are photographically documented, catalogued, and subjected to xylotomy examination under an optical microscope in polarized transmitted light on preparations obtained from the three diagnostic sections: transversal (perpendicular to the grain), longitudinal tangential (tangential to the growth rings) and longitudinal radial (parallel to the radius of growth rings). From the recognizable characteristics of the sample subjected to analysis, it can be assigned to a known tree species.
