Analysis of mortar samples

The test consists in the extraction of a limited quantity of mortar from the inner portion of masonry walls for its physical-chemical characterization (mineralogical-petrographic study). Samples of mortar extracts are documented, catalogued, and analysed under a polarizing microscope in thin section. The study defines the compositional and textural characteristics of the mixtures by identifying the mineralogical constituents of the binder and aggregate, evaluating the conservation condition of the mortars.
